I've done a lot of research on local Vegetarian Restaurants, and the BEST one I have found is Veggie Heaven in Teaneck, NJ. I went as far as tricking my boyfriend into thinking he was really having "General Tso's Chicken" and he couldn't taste the difference! haha. I told him after he was done with his meal, and he liked it so much he didn't mind and until this day we continue to order take out from them.
I found that the name of this "meat" is Seitan and that it can be bought in places like Trader Joe's or Asian markets. I read from a lot of Veggie Blogs that Seitan was easy and cheaper to make than to buy. I found an easy to follow YouTube video on how to make Seitan, and very excited about it, I bought the ingredients--flour, salt-- last week and I went home and tried it. Here's the very easy to follow video:
My first attempt, was a quick failure. Simple. After trying to wash the flour, it just disintegrated.
My second attempt, it actually came out exactly like the video. A sponge like ball. That tasted like sponge. It was honestly disgusting. I would have taken a picture of it, but I threw it out right away, also because it had a funky smell. But the picture below is exactly what it looked like. I've decided that my next step with Seitan will be to BUY IT!
