Sushi Feast

Photos by: Jonathan Tineo

I know what you're thinking. Sushi is one of those things that is better left to the professionals. I love sushi, and I've been flirting with the idea of making them at home for a long time. I did not dare though ruin the image of good sushi, so I never had the ovaries to try it. I got a Vegetarian cookbook for Christmas, and the first random page I opened it to was to a Sushi recipe! After a long time of shying away from it, I knew I had to try it. I was determined.
I went to H SuperMart (Asian Market) and got the tools necessary to make the perfect sushi. I must have watched 10 different YouTube videos on how to roll sushi until I felt confident enough to try it 2 days later. The first time, I made shrimp sushi. I'll be honest, it was not perfect, but it was tasty and very close to the authentic version.
The second time (yesterday), it was a hit! I made spicy (and by spicy I mean the HOTTEST sauce ever made) tuna rolls, fresh tuna rolls, and shrimp rolls. It was a Sushi Feast!
I guess the second time around I felt more confident and got the hang of the rolling mat, which if not done correctly can make sushi loose and messy.
Though I'm not Japanese, I feel pretty good about saying I've mastered one of their dishes, and also one of my favorites :)
